Fata Narrat: Short Stories

Alfred and the Broken Hinge

Alfred Mobley stared at the rusted gate, its hinges creaking like an old man with a bad knee. He had told himself he wouldn't come back here, not after what had happened.

But Jasper Tejeda had called, voice shaking, saying Charley Culver had been taken. And Alfred knew that if he didn't do something, he'd never forgive himself.

The gate groaned as he pushed it open, the smell of damp earth and old wood filling his lungs. He had been here before, years ago, when he and Charley had been young and reckless.

Now, the place was a graveyard of abandoned machinery, the kind of place that made men forget their names. Alfred stepped over a broken gear and into the unknown.

He found them in the old warehouse, Charley tied to a chair and Jasper standing over him, hands raised in surrender. A man with a scar across his cheek sneered at Alfred, holding a knife to Charley's throat.

Alfred's heart pounded as he stepped forward, hands raised in a gesture of peace. He had no weapon, no plan, just the hope that he could talk his way out of this.

But the man with the scar laughed, a sound like broken glass. 'You think you can save him?' he said. 'You don't even know what you're walking into.'

Alfred didn't know. But he had no choice but to try. He stepped closer, ignoring the knife at Charley's throat.

The fight was over in seconds, a blur of movement and shouting. Alfred had no idea how he managed to disarm the man, but he did.

Jasper pulled Charley free, and they ran, the sound of footsteps echoing behind them. Alfred didn't look back. He just ran, heart pounding, breath ragged.

They made it back to the gate, but the place was no longer the same. The gate had been left open, the hinges broken, the rusted metal now a jagged wound.

Alfred looked back one last time, the memory of the fight still fresh in his mind. He had saved Charley, but the cost had been higher than he had ever imagined.
