Fata Narrat: Short Stories

Whispers in the Dark

In the heart of the city, there stood an old mansion that had been abandoned for decades. Its windows were boarded up, and its doors remained locked tight, keeping secrets long buried within. Lila was always drawn to the eerie silence it emitted but never ventured inside until one stormy night. The rain pounded against the mansion's roof like drumbeats, echoing through the narrow streets as she approached. As she stepped inside, the floorboards creaked underfoot, and shadows danced on the walls. Her heart raced with a mixture of fear and anticipation.

The house seemed to pulse with a dark energy, its air thick with an ancient dread. Lila's breath quickened as she explored each room, finding only empty spaces and the faint whispers of voices that faded into silence as soon as she turned her head. In the attic, she discovered a diary, bound in black leather, its pages filled with disturbing entries about a ritual performed by former occupants. As she flipped through, a chill ran down her spine, and she couldn't shake the feeling of being watched.

Suddenly, a shadow darted across the room, causing Lila to jump. The creaking floorboards echoed ominously as if mocking her presence. Panic began to set in, and she fumbled for the diary, hoping its contents would offer clues about what was lurking within the walls. The pages were yellowed with age, but the ink remained black and bold.

'You should not be here,' a voice whispered behind her. Lila spun around, only to see an old man standing in the shadows of the attic. His eyes glowed with an otherworldly light, and his presence sent shivers down her spine. He spoke again, 'The ritual must never be broken.'

Confused and scared, Lila stumbled backward, tripping over a loose floorboard. The diary slipped from her hands, landing in front of the old man. He reached out, grabbing it with an unnatural grip, and the pages fluttered open to a page that read, 'Tonight...'. Lila's eyes widened as she realized the night was far from over.
