Fata Narrat: Short Stories

Time Traveler's Dilemma

Final Draft of Time Traveler's First Journey

John had always dreamed of time travel. Now, as he stood in front of the sleek, silver device, his heart raced with anticipation. The contraption hummed softly, its display lighting up to show a shimmering timeline before him. He took a deep breath and stepped inside.

The world around him vanished as the machine whirred into action. For a moment, everything went dark. When light returned, John found himself in a bustling street filled with people dressed in 1920s attire. The aroma of coffee and the distant sound of jazz bled through the air. His mind raced with thoughts of the historical event he was about to witness: the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.

John's first destination was a pivotal moment in history. He approached the crowd, trying to blend in but feeling like an outsider. His hands trembled as he held back his urge to step forward and make a difference. The historian inside him urged caution; altering history could have unpredictable consequences. Yet, the human side of John whispered that one small action might change everything.

After a few hours, John returned to the device. As he activated it again, the world around him faded away once more. This time, he emerged in a dystopian future where technology had advanced beyond recognition but humanity was struggling to survive. Skyscrapers reached into the sky like metallic fingers, and people moved through crowded streets with expressions of desperation.

Back at his own time, John felt a mix of awe and trepidation. The machine hummed quietly as if reading his emotions. He knew that every trip would come with its own set of challenges and decisions. For now, he was content to observe rather than intervene. But the question lingered: should he step in or remain an observer?

The device continued to beep softly, inviting John on another journey. He stepped forward once more, his heart pounding with a mixture of excitement and dread.
